Indonesia is recorded as one of countries with the greatest geothermal source potential in the world. The potential is estimated to reach 28.52 Gigawatt (GW). With such great potential, Indonesia keeps on boosting the construction of Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) to reduce the consumption of coal of which the sources keep on declining.
Based on a research of CDMI Consulting that in the last six years the capacity of national plants has kept on increasing although the increase is relatively slow of 2.3% on the average per annum. In 2015, the national plant capacity amounted to 54,687 MW soared to 69,978 MW in 2019 and predicted to reach 78,093 MW in 2020.
Besides State Owned Electricity Company (PLN), the construction of PLTP in Indonesia is carried out by PERTAMINA through its subsidiary company PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy. Since 2015 – 2020 Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) of PLN only had a capacity of 557.50 MW while total power plant capacity managed by PLN had kept on increasing from 36,052.18 MW in 2015 to 47,021.49 MW in 2020.
Meanwhile, the development of capacity of Non PLN PLTP seems to keep on increasing although its contribution towards national capacity is still relatively small. In 2015, total Non PLN PLTP capacity amounted to 18,605.54 MW soared to 27,292.28 MW in 2019 and to 31,071.78 MW in 2020.
