Electric car industry in Indonesia in upcoming few years will have bright prospect. It is seen from the increasing domestic consumption as a result of the rising population and income per capita. The escalating sales of conventional cars are also an indication of the large consumption of electric cars in the country. That is why the government appreciates the development of the domestic electric car industry.
Actually, the electric car industry has been started since 2012 driven by the Minister of BUMN Dahlan Iskan. Some of the products which were successfully launched included the Ahmadi Electric Car. This electric car was made by one of the machine tools industry, PT Sarimas Ahmadi Pratama in Depok. It was then followed by Tucuxi, Selo, Gendhis, Lipi Electric Car, ITB Electric Car, the Natives’s Electric Car and Cassowary Electric Car. Unfortunately, efforts to develop the electric car industry had been neglected since there were no government support and inadequate infrastructures.
The euphoria of electric vehicles has just been felt in Indonesia after the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) related to electric cars was signed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). All parties are preparing to welcome the era of vehicle electrification in Indonesia. Automotive people, especially those who are enthusiastic about electric vehicles, gathered at the 2019 Indonesia Electric Motor Show (IEMS).
The national electric car industry is hoped the government since it has several advantages, namely energy saving, environmentally friendly, zero emissions, and low operating costs. Electric cars will become the vehicle trend in the future amidst the depletion of fuel oil supplies.
